Ophiuchus is the Serpent holder or the snake charmer, the snake is a constellation in it own right called Serpens. Another name for this constellation is Serpentarius, which I think is a far more evocative and pleasant sounding name, apart from it being easier to spell.
The myth surrounding this constellation is that of Aesculapius, a medicine man so gifted that he was able to perform the miraculous feat of bringing the dead back to life. Zeus was so enraged by this mere physician playing god that he destroyed him with a thunderbolt. Apparently however, it was Hades that provoked this, complaining that fewer souls were being sent down to the underworld as a result. The centaur Chiron raised Aesculapius and his mother is said to be
Corvus the crow. That is interesting as this constellations hasn’t got a great reputation either.
It is suggested Aesculapius as its other derivative Asklepios, came from words meaning
“applying” and
“making limbs gentle”. It is also associated with the words hermit, gentle, kind, calm and soothing. Medicine comes from the same root as Medusa, the name of the sorceress Medea also comes from this root. The blood from Medusa’s left side was poisonous and the right side was used to heal. You could say that Aesculapius used this blood as medicine.
The coiled up snake can also be seen as the Kundalini, the word itself in Sanskrit means
“coiled up”. The igniting and harnessing of this life force is the aim of witch doctors and shamans. This will be done through the use of drumming, trance and hallucinogens. This takes us back to this constellation being known as the snake charmer. The snake is hypnotized by the playing of a musical instrument, the old fashioned version of trance music.
Of course integral to the shamans role is inducing altered states of consciousness by the use of entheogens. Some have said these are the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden and of course the snake as Lilith was the temptress there. The snake is said to represent wisdom. But this is occult (meaning hidden) wisdom for a reason. Just like they say that sudden igniting of the Kundalini can send you mad, then also too much of this wisdom flooding the brain can do the same. Together this is enlightenment. Sex and spirituality is a powerful force, it hits us like a thunderbolt. The tarot card associated with Ophiuchus is the one that most people fear.
“The Lightening Struck Tower”, but a thunderbolt can either kill us or in the case of Frankenstein, bring us back to life. This is why western society is desperately in need of modern medicine man now. We need the guidance and the soothing hands to help us get over the shock.

Snake Wisdom
The earliest snake charmers were traditional holistic healers. There has always been a need to heal the rift between the body and the mind and this was done through the use of herbs, magic, divination, crystals and prayer. Now the split has become even wider, but it’s not really been since the discovery of Chiron in 1977 that alternative medicine in the west has really taken off.
It is easy to see how the negative associations with Serpentarius came about. Firstly; playing God and finding god within yourself and using the power for your own ends is very threatening for the established Gods (Zeus). Secondly, messing around with drugs and spells when one is not a trained Shaman is actually very dangerous. You are opening portals not only to helpful spirit guides, but also the earthly sprites realm. Some of these like to play tricks with you and mess with your mind. The worst-case scenario is letting in quite nasty demons.
This is true for us sexually too. Aesculapius means to open up. Surgery comes to mind, but another way to enter someone body is through sex. This is the reason promiscuity can harm women more than it does men. They too are portals. Having sex with very negative men can be extremely damaging to their soul. But on the positive side, having sex with enlightened and powerful men, even loads of them, can be fantastically empowering. Losing their seed weakens men whereas receiving it strengthens women.
While we are on the subject, I think it’s rather funny that the cock is connected to this constellation. The bird, (not the member) was sacred to Aesculapius and was sacrificed at his altar. The cock’s crow wakes people from their sleep, symbolically resurrecting them. The serpent is phallic enough as it is without any more rude associations…
According to Robson sexually these people are doomed. For the constellation in general they are
“passionate, blindly good-hearted, wasteful and easily seduced nature, unseen dangers, enmity and slander” [1].

The most important star is Ras Alhague in the head, followed by Sabik in the right leg, Han in the left knee and Sinistra in the right hand. Not much has been written about it’s smaller stars apart from the few quotes written above. Out of these, the sinister Sinistra seems to get the worst deal because it also
” gives an immoral, mean and slovenly nature“. [4] In Italian sinistra means left, so it’s odd that it is given to the right hand. This could be a reference to right brain thinking.

Ophiuchus is a large
constellation located around the
celestial equator. Its name is from the
Greek Ὀφιοῦχος "
serpent-bearer", and it is commonly represented as a man grasping the snake that is represented by the constellation
Serpens. Ophiuchus was one of the 48 constellations listed by the 2nd-century astronomer
Ptolemy, and it remains one of the 88 modern constellations. It was formerly referred to as
Serpentarius (
English pronunciation: /ˌsɜrpənˈtɛəriəs/; also
Anguitenens), a
Latin word meaning the same as its current name.
Location
It is located between
Aquila,
Serpens and
Hercules, northwest of the center of the
Milky Way. The southern part lies between
Scorpius to the west and
Sagittarius to the east. It is best visible in the northern summer and located opposite
Orion in the sky. Ophiuchus is depicted as a man grasping a
serpent; the interposition of his body divides the snake constellation Serpens into two parts, Serpens Caput and Serpens Cauda, which are nonetheless counted as one constellation.

The brightest stars in Ophiuchus include

RS Ophiuchi is part of a class called recurrent
novae, whose brightness increase at irregular intervals by hundreds of times in a period of just a few days. It is thought to be at the brink of becoming a type-1a

Barnard's Star, one of the
nearest stars to the
Solar System (the only stars closer are the
Alpha Centauri binary star system and
Proxima Centauri), lies in Ophiuchus. (It is located to the left of β and just north of the V-shaped group of stars in an area that was once occupied by the now-obsolete constellation of
Taurus Poniatovii, Poniatowski's Bull.)
In 2005, astronomers using data from the
Green Bank Telescope discovered a
superbubble so large that it extends beyond the plane of the galaxy.

In April 2007,
astronomers announced that the
Swedish-built
Odin satellite had made the first detection of clouds of
molecular oxygen in space, following observations in the constellation Ophiuchus.

supernova of 1604 was first observed on October 9, 1604, near θ Ophiuchi.
Johannes Kepler saw it first on October 16 and studied it so extensively that the
supernova was subsequently called Kepler's Supernova. He published his findings in a book titled
De stella nova in pede Serpentarii (On the New Star in Ophiuchus' Foot).
Galileo used its brief appearance to counter the
Aristotelian dogma that the heavens are changeless.
In approximately 40,000 years
Voyager 1 probe will pass within 1.6
light years of the star
AC+79 3888, which is located in Ophiuchus.

In 2009 it was announced that
GJ 1214, a star in Ophiuchus, undergoes repeated, cyclical dimming with a period of about 1.5 days consistent with the transit of a small orbiting planet.
[5] Further, the authors conclude that the planet must have a low density consistent with vast quantities of water. The proximity of this star to Earth (42 light years) makes it a tempting target for further astronomic observations.
In April 2010, the naked-eye star ζ Ophiuchi was occulted by 824 Anastasia.
Deep-sky objects
Ophiuchus contains several
star clusters, such as
IC 4665,
NGC 6633,
M9,
M10,
M12,
M14,
M19,
M62, and
M107, as well as the
nebula IC 4603-4604. The unusual
galaxy merger remnant
NGC 6240 is also in Ophiuchus. In 2006, a new nearby
star cluster was discovered associated with the 4th magnitude star
Mu Ophiuchi.

Mamajek 2 cluster appears to be a poor cluster remnant analogous to the
Ursa Major Moving Group, but 7 times more distant (approximately 170 parsecs away).
Mamajek 2 appears to have formed in the same star-forming complex as the
NGC 2516 cluster roughly 135 million years ago.

History

Aratus, informed by the lost catalogue of
Eudoxus of Cnidus (4th century BC):

Yet they too can be seen, for they are not feeble. Both firmly clutch the Serpent, which encircles the waist of Ophiuchus, but he, steadfast with both his feet well set, tramples a huge monster, even the Scorpion, standing upright on his eye and breast. Now the Serpent is wreathed about his two hands – a little above his right hand, but in many folds high above his left.[9]
According to
Roman era mythography,
[10] the figure represents the healer
Asclepius, who learned the secrets of keeping death at bay after observing one serpent bringing another healing herbs. To prevent the entire human race from becoming
immortal under Asclepius' care,
Zeus killed him with a bolt of
lightning, but later placed his image in the heavens to honor his good works.
There is no evidence of the constellation preceding the
classical era. In
Babylonian astronomy, a "Sitting Gods" constellation seems to have been located in the general area of Ophiuchus. Gavin White proposes that Ophiuchus may in fact be remotely descended from the Babylonian constellation, representing
Nirah, a Babylonian serpent-god who was sometimes depicted with his upper half human but serpents for legs, perhaps identical with the constellation of Babylonian astronomy.

Islamic astronomy (
Azophi's
Uranometry, 10th century), the constellation was known as
Al-Ḥawwaʾ "the snake-charmer".
Aratus describes Ophiuchus as trampling on
Scorpio with his feet. This is depicted in Renaissance to Early Modern
star charts, beginning with
Albrecht Dürer in 1515; in some depictions (such as that of
Johannes Kepler, 1604), Scorpio also seems to threaten to sting Serpentarius in the foot. This is consistent with
Azophi, who already included
ψ Oph and
ω Oph as the snake-charmer's "left foot", and
θ Oph and
ο Oph as his "right foot", making Ophiuchus a
zodiacal constellation at least as regards his feet.
[12] This arrangement has been taken as symbolic in later literature, and placed in relation to the words spoken by God to the serpent in the
Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:15).

The zodiac is “A belt on the celestial sphere, about 8° either side of the ecliptic, which forms the background for the motions of the Sun, Moon, and planets.” The ecliptic passes through more than 12 constellations, it passes through 13, the thirteenth being Ophiuchus. Why do the astrologers ignore poor old Ophiuchus? Probably because it is not a particularly bright constellation. But that does not change the fact that the ecliptic passes through 13 constellations, not 12.

The solar year has a little more than 364 days. The lunar month has just over 29 days. To reconcile these awkward figures the ancient astronomers devised a calendar of thirteen equal months, each of 28 days or four equal weeks. This calendar is all but regular, with the full moon falling one day and one hour later each month, and with only a small correction to be made at the end of the year.
The lunar months (or 'moon ths'), were represented in the skies by the constellations of the zodiac; and on the ground by a circle of trees in the sacred grove. Twelve of the signs of the zodiac are familiar to us from the astrology columns in the daily newspapers, but what happened to the thirteenth, and what was its symbol? This question can be answered by consulting the works of the ancient astronomers. Ptolemy of Alexandria gives the name of the constellation, and also the bearing and magnitude of the stars which form it. The constellation was called Ophicius (in Greek) and Serpentarius (in Latin). Both names mean 'snake-holder', and refer to the pythoness, the high priestess of the goddess temples. The symbol of this sign, a bare-breasted woman holding snakes, occurred in the Sumerian; Minoan, and other cultures of the Archaic period. Thus the missing month, the month that we disrupted an orderly calendar to avoid, was the month of the Goddess
Less familiar is the forgotten thirteenth sign, which lies "betwixt" them, Ophicius, the Snake-Holder, the symbol of which was a goddess or priestess brandishing two snakes, and which connoted the most important new moon in the goddess' lunar calendar. Milton, who also wrote the Book of Common Prayer used by Protestant congregations, has told us here in cryptic form that he was mindful that the Christian Satan (aka the Devil), was a new name given to an older but unmentionable deity, the goddess.

THE WORD OBEAH
Now, while it is true that the ORIGIN of the word is indeed obscured and clouded in secrecy, it is primarily because Obeah, as implied above, is in itself clouded in secrecy --- being the remnant of a once very powerful and celebrated SECRET religious Order lost in the mist of time. Moses, who escaped with his people out of Egypt with the full might of the Pharaoh's army hot on their heels all the way to the Red Sea --- where the army reportedly then drowned --- forbade in the name of God, the Israelites even to enquire about the demon Ob, which is translated in the first testament as a necromancer, wizard, or Diviner. In today's world the various translations are wide enough to encompass the type shaman-sorcerer that the infamous Yaqui Indian Don Juan Matus apprenticed under, a Diablero, a new-world tribal spiritual elder known to embody a sense of evilness and the ability to shapeshift. Throughout the ancient world, the Middle East and Egypt, because of the brilliantly clear desert night skys, the stars and the constellations carried deep significance, both for the wandering tribes such as those following Moses and the great civilizations and city-states such as Babylonia, Sumeria, and Egypt. Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is one of those desert-sky constellations. Most people pretty much know what the Zodiac is --- the constellations on the plane of the ecliptic through which the sun passes in the course of a year --- and what their "Sun Sign" is in relation to the Zodiac (i.e., Sagittarius, Taurus, etc.). What most people don't know is that there are actually thirteen Sun Signs, NOT twelve. According to the official modern constellation boundaries that astronomers use today, the sun passes through thirteen constellations, not twelve. The Greeks chose to remove one of the original thirteen constellations from the Zodiac in order to accomplish their desire to have each sign rule for an even 30º of sky, so they selected Ophiuchus to be eliminated. It can only be because of his origins in Egypt as one of their most powerful dieties, on par with Osiris and Thoth, all of whom answered only to Ra. Mysteriously enough, just like Obeah is secret, hidden, and unknown, the "thirteenth constellation" of the Zodiac, Ophiuchus the Serpent Bearer is secret, hidden, and unknown. About one person in twenty is an "Ophiuchus," and they don't even know it.....
The peoples of ancient times (most typically the Pythagoreans, but others as well) had a legend that a kind of Light, described as a "living fire," flowed through all living things. Guarding this Flame was the serpent Ophioneus, very similar in respects to his nearly same namesake Ophiuchus. He was said to lay coiled in the Waters of Life. If anyone obstructed or hindered the Light of the Flame, Ophioneus would rise out of the water like a monster and consume them. The Greek philosopher Pherecydes (circa 600-550 BC) wrote a great deal about Ophioneus, having obtained the doctrines from the Phoenicians, also known as Ophites (Greece was first colonized by Ophites, serpent worshippers from both Egypt and Phoenicia). The Ophites venerated a serpent by the deity-title Ab, sometimes rendered Ob and Ob Aur, meaning Father --- as in the procreator of All. They also had the watery serpent Leviathan or Thiavat, which is same as Ophioneus. All of this ties into Abaddon that appears in Revelations as the Angel of the Abyss. It is unclear if the forces of the Abyss are fully good or evil in any way. The Obic forces that guard the Light and keep it flowing apparently take it by whatever means necessary and return it back to where it belongs when a person fails to let it flow or obstructs it.....
