Obviously its based on a fantasy version of historical time travel but its been thought out pretty well. A great learning experience especially for kids of different eras as it provides a time line.
I was actually researching the era of the Olmec,toltec,intec,maya, aztec etc the other day and encountered the ball game that is discussed in the abovementioned book. Definately a game of life and death - not a game at all and possibally
